Fashion is well known as a reliable reflection of cultural trends and historical events. On a personal level, it has become my creative vehicle for exploring the essence of life.
I employ steel and various metals to create my dresses. I like the duplicitous nature of steel which can be manipulated to appear feminine and soft while actually maintaining its strength and rigidity—an expression in contrasts and compliments.
“The Drill Team”, one of my series, is constructed of vintage gas and oil cans. The individual pieces resemble cheerleader outfits, suggesting the complexities of teenage life and delving into childhood memories, all the while parodying our nation’s clinging relationship with petroleum products.
"Flow", my recent series, explores the ebb and flow of life. It concerns passage of time within the family, nature, and events. I am looking through my eyes, tending perhaps towards a romantic vision but with tenderness and love for all that has come and gone and embracing what is happening now and in the future.
Beginning her career as a painter and print maker, McCullough switched to sculpture in 1996.
Known mostly for her work depicting women’s dresses, McCullough also has her animal and nature side. Her loves of animals inspires the creation of sculptural horses, dogs and birds.
Working mostly in steel and various metals and found objects, she also has ventured into other mediums including stone and wood. She spent a month in Italy studying and carving travertine and marble.
McCullough studied at Maryland Institute College of Art and Design, University of Maryland and the Corcoran School of Art.
Her work has been exhibited at the Hickory Museum of Art in North Carolina, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in DC, the Museum of the Americas in DC, the International Museum of the Horse in Kentucky, the Suffolk Museum in Virginia and internationally at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Merida.
Her work was exhibited at the UNESCO Ambassadorial residence in Paris, the ambassadorial residence in Brussels and she represented the U.S. in at exhibit sponsored by Saudia Arabia at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.
She is represented by galleries on the east and west coast.
