Since 2000, artist Dean Kane has developed a unique visual art form he has coined "PhotoSculpture”. Inspired in part by Mondrian, Dean has created 3-dimensional, modular wall art using a combination of photography, canvas, wood and metal structure, embellished with acrylic paints and mediums. His collection of modular pieces allows for an ever-changing installation. Dean finds joy and passion in vibrant color and creative exploration.
His dedication to photography started in his teenage years taking black and white photos and developing them in his dark room. His life-long passion for photography lead to the desire to transform 2D photography into 3-dimensional forms. The 3D dimensionality of his artwork is the culmination and combination of his photography and his 35-year career as a plastic surgeon. Evolving his surgical skills, he developed a keen visualization to create beautiful cosmetic transformations of his patient’s faces and bodies.
With his dual passions Dean expanded his creative talent into a visual art form, he calls Photosculptures. In 2011, Dean took a welding class at the Maryland Institute of Art (MICA) which added his metal dimensions into his PhotoSculptures. Dean’s PhotoSculptures are his own creations of taking his photography, morphing the images, printing out multiple layers of these images onto photographic paper, cutting out each image and re-establishing the images onto his painted canvas. He embellishes the images with acrylic paint, adds mesh and metal to form the 3D PhotoSculpture. The appearance of it being all metal is due to its lacquered hard finish.
His varied subject matter includes flora, fauna, face and body, boudoir, and architectural images which have been morphed and embellished. These subject matters were inspired by his exploration of the physical world through global hiking travels that sparked new ideas for his artworks. These sources of inspiration led him to transform flat 2D photography into whimsical 3D artforms.
Living in Baltimore many of Dean’s pieces are inspired by the historical architectural buildings such as Mount Vernon Monument, the Bromo Seltzer building, Inner Harbor, and Domino Sugar signage are just a few examples.
Dean continues his career as a plastic surgeon but also ever-expanding his artforms. The DeanKaneART collection views the mantra "plastic" in plastic and reconstructive surgery, as equal to his PhotoSculpture in "bending and molding" his reflective world.
