CAROL's profile

Visual experience has been part of my life since college. At Goucher College, I was an art history major. I studied ceramics at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Over the years, I have taught ceramics at Goucher, served on the board of directors of Baltimore Clayworks, been juried into many regional and local craft media shows, served as a juror for the Rosen Show Niche Awards, published in Ceramics Monthly, and had on-person shows at Baltimore Clayworks and The Clay Place in Pittsburgh, PA.
In addition, I opened and operated a craft gallery at Green Spring Station: Craft Concepts. Since my retirement, I have been working in clay again and have been a member artist of Baltimore Clayworks. Recently, I began exploring drawing and painting media and I discovered encaustic wax painting.
Transformation, evolution, and process have always been the primary concerns throughout my artistic career; whether with clay and glazes, with various two dimensional drawing and painting media, or with plants in the garden.
For me, the process of making “ART” is something that evolves; a process of “Emergence”. While I may have a concept in mind when I start, as I manipulate the material, it seems to develop on its own. How I make the judgment and recognize that something positive is happening, is based on years of looking, “seeing,” and testing the material. Recently, I began exploring 2 dimensional drawing and painting media and I discovered Encaustic wax painting. I have not been so energized by any technique or medium since my first experience with clay many years ago. There is a manipulative character about the wax that plays to my sensibilities. It also allows for mixed media experimentation with fiber, paper, oil pastels, digital images, found objects, etc. I find encaustic layering to reveal what lies beneath the surface; the translucency adding a new dimension.
With both clay and wax, the transformation from soft malleable material to stone-like hardness by heat still seems like magic.
