Andrea's profile

Andrea Sauer is best known for creating watercolor and oil paintings that explore the use of intense color and push areas of  more developed realistic imagery against more abstract backgrounds. Andrea was born and raised in Columbia, Maryland and started private instruction under David Zuccarini, a nationally acclaimed oil painter. She attended Maryland Institute, College of Art and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Masters in Art Education.

Andrea’s watercolor and oil paintings have always been autobiographical in some sense. They mirrored her love of life, appreciation of nature and her exuberance about color. The evolution of the work over the last few years has included more experimentation with the use of mixed media and collage while maintaining a love for color and still incorporating push/pull relationships of highly rendered flowers to a background that focuses more on abstract composition. Making art has become more ritualistic that activates senses and clears the mind. In her most recent work, her deeper connection to nature and her more spiritual belief that nature and the universe is here to support us and nurture our inner beings is evident in the subject matter and more conceptual pieces.

Sauer enjoys working with a variety of media and finds that her work is more inspired, fresh and feels more like play when she bounces from one media to the next. While this may not be typical for some professional artists, the idea of creating cookie cutter paintings or being expected to only do one type of subject matter would be limiting.

Andrea ‘s paintings have also been featured at several galleries including the Savage Mill Art Craft Collection, the DeMatteis Gallery, Gallery 1683 in Annapolis, Maryland, the William Ris Gallery in Stone Harbor, New Jersey, and Gallery RoCa in Havre De Grace. Her paintings have won several awards at the Torpedo Factory, The Gaithersburg Art Barn, The MICA Graduate Award, The Liquitex University Award, The Quiet Waters Gallery Award, and the ACLU Award. Most recently her art was displayed in New York City at the Catharine Lorrilard Wolfe International Show at the National Arts Club and juried into the Georgetown International Arts Show. She was selected by the Los Angeles County Arts Museum as one of the top 12 Emerging Artists in the United States. The U.S. State Department selected Andrea’s paintings to be displayed in foreign embassies with Andy Warhol and Wolf Kahn. She has been a member Baltimore Watercolor Society, the American Watercolor Society, the Philadelphia Watercolor Society,  the Harford Artists Association and the Torpedo Factory,.
