Amy L.'s profile

Amy L. Bernstein writes stories that let readers feel while making them think. Her multi-genre fiction explores the messy entanglements of politics and culture in the lives of  a sleuthing journalist, a human mermaid, homeless refugees, immortal archaeologists, and other plucky characters.  Baltimore figures prominently in much of her work. A former award-winning journalist,  Amy's  novels, experimental drama, and poetry are grounded in research even when things get crazy. Published novels include The Potrero Complex; the award-winning The Nighthawkers; Dreams of Song Times; and  the award-winning Fran, the Second Time Around. As a 2022 writer-in-residence with Yellow Arrow Publishing, Amy's commissioned poetry about Baltimore was included along with three other writers' work in a chapbook, Baltimore, I (Want to) Love You. Free-verse poetry has also appeared in Loch Raven Review, Lost Boys Press, Parliament Literary Journal, Passaic-Voluspa, She is Kindred, and elsewhere. Amy was a 2020 Finalist for the Petrichor Prize for best unpublished novel; winner in 2021 for best young adult novel by the Maryland Writers Assn. ; and a 2014 recipient of  a Rubys Artist Grant to produce an original drama.
