Amanda's profile
I make drawings and large, site specific installations which are also drawings. The former ink and water media works often begin as anecdotal moments either recorded or observed as I explore the city around me, and frequently evolve to enfold idiosyncratic personal iconography that emphasizes the darkly comic and absurd. The latter are motivated by similar concerns. They are (usually) composed of hundreds of quick, gestural acrylic and flashe paint sketches made with a fat brush that are then cut and collaged onto both built armatures and the existing surfaces of a space; these are sometimes further animated with embedded lighting. The effect is somewhere between a comic book and a stage set.
My work has been exhibited widely. Locally, I have participated in solo and group exhibitions at the Creative Alliance at the Patterson, School 33 Art Center, the Silber Gallery (Goucher College), the Julio Art Gallery (Loyola University), the Gormley Art Gallery (The College of Notre Dame of Maryland), Maryland Institute College of Art, Gallery CA, d center at Casewerks, Maryland Art Place, Area 405, Hamiltonian Gallery, Transformer, American University Museum of Art, Arlington Art Center, VisArts, EMP Collective, and the Stamp Gallery (the University of Maryland at College Park). Other selected venues include the Berman Museum (Collegeville, PA), the Phillips Museum (Lancaster, PA), the Gershman Gallery (Philadelphia, PA), Volta 7 (Basel, Switzerland), Halle Nord (Geneva, Switzerland), Bridge Gallery (New York, NY), Benrimon Contemporary (New York, NY), Christina Ray Gallery (New York, NY), GV/AS Gallery (Brooklyn, NY), Dorsch Gallery (Miami, FL), Harrington Arts (San Francisco, CA), The Urban Institute of Contemporary Art, The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, The Toledo Museum of Art, and the Cranbrook Institute of Art.
I was a recipient of both a Rubys Artist Project Grant and a Creative Baltimore Mayor's Artist Award in 2014, in support of my exhibition "RFP" at EMP Collective in 2015. I was curated by collector Mera Rubell into the exhibition "Baltimore Artists + WPA + Mera Rubell = Love" hosted at Marianne Boesky Gallery, NYC, in January 2014. I received Individual Artist Awards from the Maryland State Art Council in 2010, 2013, and 2015, was a semifinalist for the Trawick Prize in 2013 and 2014, and a semifinalist for the Sondheim Art Prize in 2012, 2013, and 2014. In early 2015 I was an artist in residence at the Embassy of Foreign Artists in Geneva, Switzerland, and in summer 2016 I was an artist in residence at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai, China. In summer 2018, I was an artist in residence at Paper Machine in New Orleans, LA; one of the results of that residency, my book "Quorum Call", was published by Antenna this year. Another of my artist books, "Rage Faces" is in the permanent collections of the National Museum of Women in the Arts and the New York Public Library.
I hold BA and MFA degrees from Harvard and Yale (respectively) and am currently a Professor at Towson University.
