Alpha Massaquoi Jr. is a Baltimore-based artist who creates captivating charcoal and pastel drawings that explore themes of identity, resilience, and the human experience. At fourteen, Alpha and his family immigrated to the United States seeking the "American dream." However, the realities of the 2008 recession and the challenges of racism and colorism presented new obstacles. Despite these difficulties, Alpha's artistic passion persisted. He earned a Bachelor of Science from Towson University and a Master of Fine Arts from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. His charcoal drawings have garnered recognition and have been collected by both private collectors and major institutions.
Alpha's work draws inspiration from Gothic period paintings, emphasizing the figure and its emotional journey through dramatic lighting and contrasting tones. He often depicts individuals whose stories resonate with his own experiences, capturing the complexities of identity and the human condition.
