Katie's profile

Katie was born in Canada and currently lives in Baltimore, Maryland. She recently completed her MFA at the Mount Royal School of Art, Maryland Institute College of Art, in Baltimore, MD. Formerly Katie graduated from the Canadian Film Center Media Lab?s Interactive Art and Entertainment Program, in Toronto, CAN (2007) and earned a BA Honors in International Development and English from Saint Mary?s University, Halifax, CAN (2002). Katie has also apprenticed with Joan Jonas, pioneer of performance art.

Her work has been presented in various festivals and galleries in Canada and across the United States, including: The Contemporary Museum, Baltimore, MD (2011); Hillyer Art Space, Washington, DC (2011); Woman Made Gallery, Chicago, IL (2011); Open Ears Festival (2009), Free Fall Festival (2006), TYPE Books Gallery (2008), Lennox Contemporary (2007), Harborfront Centre (2008) and John B. Aird Gallery (2008), in Toronto, ON. Her first solo show was well reviewed by Canada?s leading art critic, Gary Michael Dault, in The Globe and Mail (2008) and just last spring a selection of her drawings were published in New American Paintings, MFA Annual (2011).

Katie also enjoys curating and has an unusual talent for conceiving, coordinating and collaborating ridiculously enjoyable and absurdly social events. In 2011 Katie conceived of Great Than Once Artist Salon, where she invited people to work with her on creating a bi-monthly salon. By creating a platform for friends, current grads and MICA Alums to talk about their work in an unconventional way and in an unconventional salon environment Katie, spearheaded an event that would serve to unify the greater MICA community. In 2010 she curated Dance Floor Assembly, which was a re-mount of an event she previously co-conceived with Julia Burton, Director of Park Gallery in Toronto, CAN. In Dance Floor Assembly (2010), the artists in the show contributed playlists and every day at a different time people would converge in the gallery to dance for twenty minutes to an artist?s playlist. Another element of the show, involved her collaborating with Joshua Smith, a Baltimore based artist to reinterpret Richard Long?s, ?A Line Made By Walking?, the result of their collaboration produced the dance floor for the event. Previously she completed a curatorial internship at the Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, curated a series of performance art events, salons and artist talks in Toronto, CAN.
