Iris's profile

Iris Hughey is a multidisciplinary artist from Dallas, Texas. She received her BFA in Ceramics from the Maryland Institute College of Art in May of 2020 in the midst of COVID-19. Hughey focused on drawing and jewelry-making in high school, which led her onto a continued path of drawing and sculpture-making at MICA. There, she took courses focusing on ceramics, woodworking, sustainability, and social practice, gaining from them what have since deeply impacted the trajectory of her creations. Since graduating from MICA, she has resided in Baltimore, maintaining a small-scale ceramics practice in her apartment using the last bags of clay that she was able to grab in a frenzy from the school when the world began to shut down because of the pandemic. Aside from making personal and commissioned artworks, Hughey works in the Installation Department at the Baltimore Museum of Art and contributes volunteer work to the BMA's unionizing efforts as part of the union's organizing committee.
