About Victoria

From the cover of the Spring Issue of Ukulele Magazine to the front page of The Wall Street Journal, Victoria Vox (née Victoria Davitt) is making appearances everywhere—and rightly so. The artistry of her performances is both unique and endearing, captivating an incredibly diverse audience and drawing even the least musical of folks into her harmonious web. With the release of her 9th album, When the Night Unravels, Victoria’s blending of singing-songwriting with her rousing mouth trumpeting… more

Ukulele Workshops, School Assemblies, and Residencies

"I've been playing the ukulele since September 2003 and had no idea what the future had in store for me. In 2005 I became sponsored by KoAloha Ukuleles in Hawaii and was then invited to perform at the New York City Ukulele Festival in April 2006. Ever since, I've been performing at Ukulele Festivals around the world (France, Italy, Australia, and across the USA). The wonderful thing about the festivals is that the performers are also asked to give workshops. I've given workshops to kids, adults (young and old). One of my favorite workshops was an after school program for juveniles in Aberdeen, NC. I teach songwriting, ukulele rhythm, technique, and occasionally, mouth trumpet. Sometimes, we are able to get grant money to purchase inexpensive ukuleles for the kids, which then they get to keep. That always feels awesome." - Victoria Vox

When the Night Unravels CD (2015)

Release date: January 20, 2015

Victoria Vox – a one-woman show with ukulele, bass and loop pedals, and her signature “mouth trumpet” – delivers a full band sound. Producer, Geoff Stanfield, (Sun Kil Moon, Grace Webber), elaborates on what Vox does best. On her 9th album, Vox slinks between musical styles--pop, jazz and soul--with use of ukulele, bass, horns, accordion, and synths. The album has a “night” theme, which can be interpreted two ways: turning into the dark, or coming out of it.

Boombox Séance: Uketronica

The 9-track uketronica album was written and recorded over 7 months of sporadic writing sessions, text messages, and chunks of time in Seattle, at Well Recording. The album includes 8 original songs and one cover, "Here Comes the Rain Again" by the Eurythmics.

The album was released in 2013 under the band name Boombox Séance. However, there is talk of re-releasing it, with some changes, as a Victoria Vox album with Boombox Séance as the title.

Track Listing:

  • Strangers in the Dark
Written on a tenor ukulele, Victoria Vox uses the reverse pedal for this upbeat dance song. This song was a re-write from Victoria's Week 36 song, "Dancefloor", from the 52 Song Project. While keeping the chord changes and vocal hooks, Vox re-wrote the chorus turning it into "Strangers in the Dark". Music by Victoria Vox. Lyrics by Victoria Vox and James Hall (via text message).

During the 52 Songwriting Project, Victoria Vox embarked on an electronic (with the baritone ukulele) project, "uketronica" later to become Boombox Séance. Vox composed all of the ukulele tracks and composed the chord progressions and then collaborated with Aaron English (Seattle), James Hall (Atlanta), and Jim Troglen (Birmingham) on lyrics and melodies. Once the idea of an album was in place, Vox focused her later songwriting from the 52 Song Project on Boombox Séance. Boombox Séance gave a new, and undiscovered, facet to the ukulele. With the use of looping and effects pedals, anything was possible, and the juxtaposition of the ukulele and deeply lyrical, dark electronic sounds, was created. Layered parts and textures became the signature sound for Boombox Séance.

Songwriting EN FRANCAIS

Lyrics and their melodies should be conversational. English is my first language, and I began songwriting emotionally (in English) while living in France as a foreign exchange student. Songs budded out of frustration of not being understood, or not being able to communicate properly. As my French improved, at the time, I had no idea that one day I'd be using those French skills to compose and write lyrics in French. It takes a different mindset, for sure. Thinking and feeling in the moment, is as important as thinking and feeling in the language.

the 52 Original Song Project

Subscribers paid $52 to receive 52 original songs in 2012. Here were my guidelines to hold me accountable, yet giving me space to create:

1) If you do not receive 52 mp3s of raw, new music in 2012, I will refund you $1 per mp3 that I failed to deliver at the year’s end.

2) If I fail to produce a song for a week, I can make it up in future weeks (within the year, of course)… and possibly send more than one song in a week. I’m hoping I won’t have to do that… but I’m just putting that out here now :)

3) The recording quality may vary week-to-week depending where I am and the equipment available to me.

4) I will do my best to not think about whether or not you might like the song. It’s unhealthy artistically to think about the end product before the song is finished. This will be interesting for us all! :)
  • Crazy Love - DRAFT
    Crazy Love - DRAFT
Text from Song Post: Week 39: Crazy Love (written and uploaded October 19, 2012) This one poured out of me like a river this morning. It was written in about 15 minutes, with some tweaking during the recording. I was going to add bass and shaker and other things, but decided to keep it super simple and raw. I’m not sure if the title should be “Crazy, Love” or “Crazy Love”. I guess I’ll leave it up to the listener as to when and where to put the comma :) I put off writing this song for about 4 weeks, but didn’t think anyone (ahem, my subscribers) wanted to hear it. I had to remind myself of one of my rules for the project: That I would not care if the subscribers liked it or not. It’s out there now... and I’m done with it. I played my Mya-Moe Flying V.2 and sang. Side Note: This song was re-recorded for the 2013 album, Key.

I played: MyaMoe Ukulele (low G), Morton Iodized Salt (as the shaker), upright toy piano, bass, and sang. Side Note: This song was re-recorded for the 2013 album, Key.

    Wildwood DRAFT - Week 52
Text from Song Post: Week 52: Wildwood (written and uploaded Dec. 26, 2012) Gosh… what an emotional day. ‘Tis the Season, right? Writing “Wildwood” this morning was really tough, mostly because I couldn’t sing / write it without breaking down into tears. Not exactly sad tears, nor happy tears… just tears. Wildwood has been “home” to the family for 40 years… As long as I remember, we had a beautiful Christmas tree in the living room, a roaring fire, the player piano going, board games galore, kids sliding down the banister, billiards on the 3rd floor, wonderful foods being made in the kitchen (thanks Grandma), and a beautiful spread in the formal dining room. In December 2011, we had our final Wildwood Christmas. Soon after, the house was put on the market. It has a steep price tag, so there haven’t been many bites. I would buy it in a heartbeat… if I could. I just need that hit song! Anyways, It didn’t really hit me that things were changing until yesterday. I had Christmas dinner with my grandparents and my mom at the kitchen table. No tree. No big dinner. No fire. Grandpa still turned on the player piano though :) “Big Spender” is his favorite song to play on it. I know that one by heart. When I first arrived, my cousin Courtney and his wife Lizzy were playing backgammon in the corner where the tree normally stood. I picked up the glockenspiel by the piano and said, “I feel a song coming on”… and that was that. It’s such a beautiful house… but with most of my grandparent’s belongings moved out, the place feels empty and not like the usual “Wildwood”. We were so lucky to have had a place like that to gather, as family. I played the family player piano for this number. It’s really out of tune... but it’s just perfect that way. Also… I could be slightly emotional as this is my FINAL song of the year. #52. THE END. I don’t think it has hit me yet. It’s been an amazing opportunity, and THANK YOU for it. Thank you for your belief, your words of encouragement, the freedom to write as I pleased, your emails, and your silence ;) Secretly, I do hope you enjoyed ALL of the tunes, although we all know that pleasing you was not what I set out to do. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year! Love Victoria

Vocal Improv: Mouth Trumpet and Vocal Performance

When Victoria was in high school, the concert band was short on trumpet players. She was moved from the woodwind section (oboe) to the brass section (trumpet), and played in both the concert and jazz bands. 10 years after putting down her trumpet, she picked it up by happenstance in the studio, and played it on her albums: Chameleon (2008), Exact Change (2010), and Key (2013). She also recorded Mouth Trumpet on her own albums: Victoria Vox and her Jumping Flea, Chameleon, Exact Change, Vox Ukulele Cello, Under the Covers, and When the Night Unravels; as well on session recordings by other artists. She continues to study recordings by jazz trumpet greats, like Chet Baker, and applies techniques from her trumpet playing days to her mouth trumpet performances.
