I collaborated with the youth artists and activists to design our website where we sell merchandise and prints.

About Maia

Baltimore City - Station North A&E District
I've always loved making art. But when I went to college, I decided to study anthropology instead. I liked working with people and the field fascinated me, so I put my art on pause for a couple of years. One of my professors happened to teach visual anthropology - the use of photography, film, and video to enhance the communication of anthropological observations and insights. Visual anthropologists also study how humans rely on what is seen and how they integrate that into their lives.  When… more

Mirkwood Mural

Mirkwood Mural is a public art space for community artists to enrich the landscape of Baltimore. During the COVID-19 pandemic and uprisings against police brutality, I collaborated with A Human Space to create this affirming reminder to give time to healing. The piece reads, “Our world can heal. I can allow our world time to heal.”  Located on 33rd St and Frisby St across from Giant in Better Waverly and Greenmount Area. Acrylic on wood panel. Art by me. Words by A Human Space. June 2020.

Youth Voices for Consent

In 2019, I developed Youth Voices for Consent (YVC) as a youth-led platform to end sexual violence and the cycle of trauma. I serve as an adult ally and advocate of the program, reflecting the essential belief that youth have the ability and power to organize with the support of adult leadership. In 2020, YVC hired 10 paid Youth Residents ages 14-21 from across Baltimore City. Youth Residents created a zine on the commodification of self care and its aggressive marketing towards Gen Z, as well as hosted a series of public movie nights open to all ages to discuss popular media depictions of consent. YVC collaborated with an abuse prevention organization to design My Body, My Boundaries, a youth-led workshop that aims to empower children with the tools to speak up and recognize their bodily rights. We designed graphic stickers and flyers to promote our workshops and events.
