About Lindsey

Baltimore City
Lindsey Griffith is a performer, playwright, and interdisciplinary artist. Currently based in Baltimore, Maryland, she was born and raised in Southern Kansas and incubated in the warm wet belly of Kansas City’s weird collaborative art community, where she lived and worked for 10 years. Her practice ranges from community-based experimental productions and interactive art to solo performance, mixing elements of theatre and contemporary performance with sculptural props and costumes to tell… more

Horse People

Written, directed, and performed by Lindsey Griffith.  This solo performance uses absurd comedy to dissect intergenerational trauma, family legends, and memory . Lindsey finds a cool rock and spirals into neurotic obsession. When she tries to solve the mystery of its allure, she sinks into the substance of the rock and her memories of texture, food, and family, coming head-to-head with a family mystery involving her mother, her mother’s mother, and her mother’s mother’s mother, who may be a horse. We climb back through generations of strange women to seek out the root of her family’s neuroses - with character comedy, projections, tap dancing, and googly eyes.
Press:
"At the core of this oddball performance is a grain of sadness, almost imperceptible amongst so many random comical elements, rooted in recognition of a flawed humanity not as the exception, but the norm." -DC Metro Theater Arts
"She attacks these characters with a goofy likeability reminiscent of a millennial Julia Louis-Dreyfus. They’re all convincingly damaged, but sparkle with charm." -DC Theatre Scene
"Hers is a sensibility comparable to Samuel Beckett’s weirdest plays and the sort of performance art you might encounter off-off-off Broadway." - DC Metro Theater Arts

The Hole Truth

A wildly-collaborative punk rock community musical, loosely adapted from a 1997 Coast to Coast AM episode. Mel Waters finds a big hole behind his house, and lowers down  a Lifesaver candy on some fishing line.  It never hits the bottom. Enter the FBI, Nevadan Basques, endangered wombats, Willie Nelson, and a Seal with Intelligent Eyes. When the hole produces a strange, ever-burning ice, Mel and the Seal must join forces from different dimensions to unite their two worlds, above and below the hole, in a battle against both the United States Army and the Ice that Can and Will Destroy the World!

Written by Lindsey Griffith, Danica Wilson, Flora Mahafffy, Danny Fischer, Suzanne Hogan, and Sean Eagan.

Wet Clown

Written, Performed, and Costumed by Lindsey Griffith.  An absurdist clown performance that subverts and submerges our culture's revered performance formats: magic shows, variety entertainment, game shows, lectures, and demonstrations. Griffith developed this character during her five years as a member of Whoop Dee Doo, a faux public access television show and performance collective. Wet Clown continues to perform independently.

Larva Magic

2015Creator, performer. I created this character, performance, and sculptural costume for a segment on Whoop Dee Doo's The Abominable Thawt at Abron's Art Center in New York City.  Every spring, after winter's frost melts away, the first larvae of spring emerges from the thawed earth. She writhes in the warmth of the sun. She produces a pack of cards and slathers them over her head capsule and viscid abdominal segments. "Pick a card, any card" she asks. You peel a card off of the larva, a trail of goo following behind as you flip over the card:  queen of diamonds.  She rubs her thoracic legs together and asks "is it the two of hearts?"  It's not.  She frowns. "Maybe next year" she says as she wriggles back into the earth.

Dream Phone

2013. Creator, performer and designer. This interactive performance featured two performers calling each other to describe their dreams.  The audience found themselves performing the dreams as they were promted to dance, fight, celebrate, mourn, and nest amidst a sea of pretty trash. Presented as part of Liminal, a night of interactive performances curated by Carmen Moreno for Black House Collective's Black Lab Series.  Created and performed with Charlie Mylie.
Performance History:
October 2013 / Paragraph Gallery / Kansas City MO.

72 Ours Together

2012. Creator, performer, facilitator. I designed and facilitated this adventure game and interactive, durational performance in collaboration with Charlie Mylie. The game uses player-contributed prompts as missions for a group adventure. We played the game for 72 hours straight in Tulsa, Oklahoma to explore an unfamiliar city, engage and include the public, and elicit group performance.  Documentary installation exhibited at Hardesty Arts Center as part of Concept/OK, in conjunction with the Oklahoma Visual Art Coalition and the Charlotte Street Foundation.

CREGG

2015. Creator and performer. CREGG was a very large and very hungry baby bird pinata that I created with collaborator Charlie Mylie.  The sculptural pinata was activated in a durational and participatry performance in which CREGG was taken on a 5 mile parade through New York City.  Over 12 hours and 5 miles, we carried CREGG through the streets of New York, soliciting offerings from the public.  Strangers and friends fed CREGG with a variety of objects.  The parade ended in Prospect Park, where we hosted a picnic around CREGG.  At the end of the picnic CREGG was bust open, revealing the objects and finally freeing CREGG of his coporeal hunger.

In Light Of

2017. Creator and performer.  In Light Of  uses a house lamp to investigate power and relationships.  When the light is on, the audience sees moments of motion  and tension between two performers.  These pieces accumulate into a story that is unique to each audience member - as they are left to fill in the  gaps themselves, using the human brain's powerful urge to create stories.  The piece uses the Japanese philosophy of Ma, "the space between".  In Light Of  builds a complex antinarrative with the simple repetition of turning a house lamp on and off, building a language out of the dichotomies of lightness and darkness, stillness and motion, conflict and cooperation, being and doing.  Created and performed with Laura King-Pazuchowski.
