About Kathleen Patricia
I have lived most my life in Baltimore, MD and studied painting at Maryland Institute College of Art. Though much of my work is still influenced by my painting language, my current work is also very affected by my desire to explore and expand my materials use and my visual vocabulary.

This Is Not About Romance
This collection of work was all produced in the first 5 months of my Artist-in-Residency at Creative Paradox in Annapolis, MD. All three of these works were inspired by relational gains and losses. Each of these works juxtapose distressed materials with cleanly drawn and sculpted images. The roses and plants were used because they are commonly considered kitsch, romantic, and wild.

Native Invasives (Someone's Nightmares, But Not Mine) Installation
"Native Invasives (Someone's Nightmares, But Not Mine)" installation was designed to immerse the viewer. The installation juxtaposes highly distressed paper with cleanly painted images of white tailed deer, plantain, and dandelions. Images were chosen for their commonality and lack of desirability in cultivated North American landscapes. These images document "Native Invasives" at the Creative Paradox Gallery in Annapolis, MD in the Summer of 2014.

144 Monsters
"144 Monsters" is the collection of 144 individual paintings and drawings. I composed them with the simple challenge of producing 144 pieces of art of which all would both reference a figure and reference the materials. This was a playful exercise in abstraction where I limited myself to two dimensions and a small size. These images are the installation of this piece at the Creative Paradox Studios in the fall of 2014.

Dear Mario
This public diary began as my personal sketchbook in 2013. As the book progressed, I began composing the spreads with the eye of the public in mind. Over the course of two years, personal entries surrounding a romantic relationship became the focus of the book. Completed in 2015, "Dear Mario" is now broken into three confessional diaries which span two years of the start, progression, and eventual end of the relationship. When presented in gallery settings, the books are presented for the public to handle. For more views please go to www.kathleenpdurkin.com.
