Caricature--Traditional Techniques on Paper
Retail and studio pieces reflecting my Pandemic-era online study of the art of caricature. In 2020, I was fortunately able to take 16 weeks of intense international professional caricature classes virtually with the amazing teachers at Caricature Japan. These classes were only available during the pandemic, during the period of lockdown in Japan, and from these courses I have begun my professional career as a caricaturist. I now make caricatures at the Baltimore Farmers Market, where I have sold hula hoops at an interactive circus stand for the past decade. I am also now hired to draw quick live black and white caricatures to folks at local parties and events. The transition to caricature helped me to connect with people during our lockdown times and has helped me to connect with folks as we return to society. I have found that sitting for 5-10 minutes with someone while you make their souvenir cartoon creates a potential for a valuable moment of human to human content, checking in and hearing whatever story the customer model has in mind.
I have become a member of the International Society of Caricature Artists (ISCA), and from there I have met online weekly with caricaturists around the world. In November of 2020, I attended my first virtual caricature convention, and in November of 2021 I joined ISCA artists for my first in-person caricature convention. There I met many inspiring artists, including, most famously caricaturist and comedian Kevin Nealon. I happened to sit beside Mr. Nealon and was able to draw his picture. I believe that the artists I met at this convention will inspire and shape the artist I will become in the year and years ahead.
