Masks
Many of my paintings evolve from works on paper, painted sketches. In 2015 I recycled a lot of my paper-based pieces into this series of collages that I call "re-masks". Each consists entirely of an older, cut up, acrylic and ink painting on paper. Some of them include found images. These two dimensional masks have been installed unframed and as a group on a large wall, but here are shown individually.

Totem
I believe in the idea that we sense spiritual forces through the natural world: that water, wind, plants and patterns are inhabited or personified. One of my favorite books is My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, by Nigerian author Amos Tutuola. In his folklore, he deals not with "deads" but with dangerous and mischievous spirits of the wild, in the heart of a tropical forest. Animal symbolism is a constant in my work. I am driven by the idea that we each have one or more totem animals that act as messengers or spirit guides, and embody our internal conflicts. It is a popular misconception that we choose them. Rather, they choose us.

Silkscreen Monoprints
These silkscreen monoprints were created at Self Help Graphics & Art in East Los Angeles, CA, with Master Printer Jose Alpuche, in the summer of 2000. I was among a group of artists from D.C. and Baltimore, hosted by a group from California in a creative exchange/exhibition we called "East Meets West".

Landscape and Consciousness
This is a selection of older works, oil on canvas. The natural references are inspired by my travels to New Mexico and coastal areas throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. Landscape is both an internal and external place; I am essentially exploring the tension between them.
