About James
Howard County
After retirement from a career in health care statistics and economics, I bought a camera in 2011 to take pictures of birds, under presure from my wife, an avid birder. But, soon, I became interested in photographing my everyday surroundings; woods, structures and buildings. If some photographers call themselves travel photographers, then I would be the opposite--a stay at home photographer. So I look around Howard and Baltimore City and County to find subects--there are so many.

Invasive
Non-native species have invaded and taken over the fragmented woods in suburbs. These plants together with the dying native trees, form intricate and grotesque shapes. These images were taken in Howard County Maryland over the course of two years and show the invasion by three species from abroad, Oriental Bittersweet, Porcelaine Berry, and English Ivy, which were introduced as ornamentals.
HCC Under Construction
From January to September 2016, I returned frequently to the construction site of the Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) building at Howard Community College in Columbia, MD to photograph the progress of the project. Then I used Photoshop to make composites of photos of different parts of the building taken at different times. The results were displayed in a solo show at the College in 2017.

Statue at Horowitz Center
During the day as the sun passes over the abstract statue outside the entrance to the Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center at Howard Community College in Columbia, MD the mix of shadows and light on the statue and on the building behind the statue changes. Over the course of 2018-21, I returned to the statue to record different views.

Painting a water tower
From 2015 to 2017 I noticed that two water towers in Columbia, MD were being repainted. The process began with installing a frame of metal and wires to hold a canvas cover over the tower. The purpose of the cover was to contain the dust and paint powder produced when the old paint was removed. Then primer and final coats were applied. After each application, the cover was raised so the paint would dry.
