Cao's House (Trailer)Cao’s House is a short documentary about my grandfather who recalls his memories of his father and his father’s houses which were burned down during the Wenxi Fire of 1938. The presence of the buildings in the documentary stands in contrast with the absence of the houses that feature in my grandfather's narrated memories. The history of the Cao family echoes the larger experience of the city that was burned down during the Wenxi Fire of 1938 along with the dramatic changes experienced afterwards.

Untitled(Disappearing)Untitled(Disappearing) is the project that explores the nonlinear correlation between the Scorched Earth Policy executed in Changsha, China, in 1938 and the current gentrification policy executed in the city downtown. This series of digital print starts with the photographs I took in Chaozong District which is the area that will be reconstructed as “historic district” . After printing out the images of the decrepit buildings that will be demolished soon, I paint with green oil paint partly and scratch over it. After scanning the manipulated digital prints, I photoshop the digital file and use color select tool to delete the part of green and overlay the archived images of the city taken before 1938. Then, I print out the digital file again and scratch it over again... Eventually, the digital prints are transformed into VR experience, existing in reality virtually.

Hymn to the FallenHymn to the Fallen includes two parts. Hymn to the Fallen( Part I) is a virtual reality piece that the singular encounter of virtual reality experienced through HTC Vive VR headset is transformed into a collective experience by connecting the VR headset and HD projector. This VR space is chaotic, multi-layered, and lacking an origin, and the floating memory of the Wenxi Fire of 1938 meets the virtual reality experience which echos the last line of Hymn to the Fallen( Part II): Memories are like digitalizing physical beings/They are Real/They are Virtual/They are Virtual Realities. Hymn to the Fallen (Part II) is a 13min 25sec video piece narrating the process of using photogrammetry in making virtual models of four architectural structures in Changsha, China. Paralleling with the narration of making virtual models, the memories of the Wenxi Fire of 1938 attached to these four buildings sneak into the narrative.
