About Fiona
My name is Fiona Sergeant, and I'm an American artist born in 1992 in New Jersey.
I move through the landscape in search of images to capture, in search of images to make mine.
I move through the landscape awaiting what I am meant to see.
When I take a photograph, I am writing my history.
I am manifesting my destiny as I will remember it and as it will be seen.

Looking/Seeing
Looking/Seeing was a meditation on the act of viewing. I was thinking about both the gazes of the people within the photographs, and my own gaze and attraction to certain formal situations.
Flattest
These images were made surrounding a road trip throughout the American South. Upon returning, I scanned many of the objects from the trip that I felt were important (only a selection of all images are included in this project submission).
While looking through the photographs I had taken, I was struck by the sense of flatness of both the images and the subject matter. I thought of them as a series of flat planes and simple geometries. The objects scans had the inverse feeling. Since they were captured using a decide meant for flat planes (the scanner), their dimensionality was highlighted.
The 3D spaces were flatted by the camera while the scanner exaggerated dimensionality.

The Fall
Last year nearly all the trees in my childhood neighborhood were blown down. Over 300 trees fell. This collection of photographs was made with that in mind.
The Land of Nod
These landscapes are made of language. They were coded and then printed. I made them to have their own secrets and their own rules. They are sentient landscapes, land populated by landscape.
Moon Rose, Three Attempts, and an image of myself
These three pieces are not really one project, but they are demonstrative of some of my thoughts on the image and attempts to see something, to hold something, and to know something.

Moon Rose PoemPlease click to enlarge and read. This is a poem I wrote and serves as a bit of a preface for the rest of the work presented.
-
Three Attempts to Catch the LightI put myself in the place of the enlarger and attempted to bounce and catch the light by hand.

Selfscan 1This is one of a series of bodyscans. I am interested in scanning as a form of large format photography. Like shooting with a high aperture, one must hold still to get more detail.
