About Estee

Estee Fox
b. 1988

I was born and raised in Denver, Colorado before moving to Baltimore in order to pursue my Masters degree at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Having grown up with the Internet I was exposed to many different cultures and ideologies. Subsequently my art has become a place where I can question, explore and expose concepts integral to my art work; communicating ideas about loss, memory, age and motherhood. This work is speaking in dialogue with and at times, critiquing subjects which are kitsch, minimal, nihilistic and punctuated with my own decadence. I acknowledge both their subject and content as an accurate language, though I don’t find it to be self-sustaining on many levels. I push my own work to evolve from these tropes into frontiers that explore comparative mythologies and how they can be altered or created and tied into contemporary neroscience.

Familiar with 19th century Austrian and Russian painters, I utilized similar line/brush work; as well as incorporating Japanese wood block print techniques for their multiple perspectives, architecture and flow of time when viewed as a 2D piece.

Drawing from my knowledge of American culture, themes reveal themselves through subject selection, which portrays images of select scenes and individuals performing actions. Some are imaginary, the pieces reflect ever emerging changes within our society, changes that are both cultural and physical.

Gouache, oil bar, charcoal, mica, graphite, ink and paper on paper

For the images, I work with photos that I have taken myself, or found online in a process based media exploration of American culture. Some of my 'erotic' images are screen shots of webcam couples, for an example.

Cook

Gouache, charcoal, ink, graphite and mica on paper

For process I use no matrix, everything is by hand. I do use painter’s tape and Frisket to pop negative and positive space. I use abrasives such as sand paper, while also rubbing and pealing off layers of the thick, cottony flesh like paper I use.
