Malissa's profile

Malissa Wilkins, otherwise known as Afrovelvet, is a designer, art director, and performance artist who fuses together imagery, wearable art, and music to present inventive productions. Wilkins graduated from The George Washington University with a B.A in Journalism and Mass Communication. She is skilled in many fields, like photography, video, direction, design, styling, music and theatre, which allows her to work across disciplinaries. Her work has been featured at the National Museum for Women in the Arts, The Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage, and The Smithsonian's Portrait Gallery. Moreover, she has toured with her productions and visual works, presenting in cities like New Orleans, New York, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, and Washington, DC.

Velvet uses concepts and ideas, fantasies and "lightbulbs," to conceive utopian designs + visuals for humans to experience -- and to accept as an alternate reality that can be attained. From fashion design and editorial styling, creative brand development and consultations, to artist management and marketing, Afrovelvet finds pleasure in curating art in its many forms.  Wilkins' mission for Afrovelvet is to reimagine the "black" human's existence and collective identity from an inside perspective. She does this through creating conceptual works  like her photo series, CATALYST, and live productions like her fashion show series 100% Cacao.  Velvet is now working on her 3rd wearable art collection and an accompanying film, which she plans to present in 2022 in Baltimore, Tokyo and select cities across the globe.
