Frank's profile

Frank Smith takes his artistic inspiration from Shibui, a Japanese word which refers to a particular aesthetic of simple, subtle and unobtrusive beauty.

"I strive to create simple and elegant images. I think I have made progress on 'simple', the 'elegant' may require a lifetime." Frank's work has been published in Rangefinder Magazine, and recently selected by New Mexico Magazine. He has won numerous awards for his work. He was one of four artists whose work was chosen for the Himmelfarb Gallery of the Tai Sophia Institute during 2009. He is represented by the Gail Pierson Gallery, Cape May, NJ, the William Ris Gallery, Stone Harbor and Avalon, NJ, and The Accent Gallery in Ocean City, NJ. During 2012 he will also exhibit at the M.T. Burton Gallery in Surf City, NJ.

Frank Smith was born in Philadelphia and graduated Drexel University completing bachelors and masters degrees. He also received an MBA from New York University, the Stern School. He and his wife spent two years in Cali, Colombia as Peace Corps Volunteers.

Following a successful career in international business, he began this new venture by taking intensive courses at The Santa Fe Workshops in New Mexico. He has studied with photographers Jay Maisel, Eddie Soloway, John Weiss, Arthur Myerson, David Scheinbaum and Janet Russek.
