  • Deeds Not Words
    Deeds Not Words

Finding beauty in the unfinished or sometimes messy side of life, I examine the relativity of truth to each individual. In Post-Modernism, we moved from the Modernism question of ‘What does it mean?’ to the question: “What does it mean to me?” Nothing is more important at this point in time than reflecting on one’s identity and our relationship to and with others. Building respectful relationships is a core value.

In this piece, I explore the women's individual colors and personalities, creating stylized portraits that epitomize their hearts and elements of their beautiful personalities. These three women, friends of mine, are impressive in their own right! This painting is me, imagining the three of them coming together in a room for the first time - bursting with energy, ideas, and positive ways to change the world, one deed (and word) at a time!

The Gathering - Still Waiting (Elaine Weiner-Reed)
THE GATHERING - STILL WAITING (JUDGMENT DAY) by Elaine Weiner-Reed Acrylic and Latex - 48 x 48 Inch . . The Gathering Them: Who is she? What is she doing here? Wasn’t this by invitation only? I don’t understand… Her: What am I doing here? And what’s going on with this red chair? Where is the person I was supposed to meet? And who in the world are those people in the shadows? Them: She looks nervous. She seems capable. Is she too short? She looks too young to me… What am I doing here? Hey, give me some space… Where are our chairs or benches? Who gathered us here? Her: I thought this was a gathering place with music and song. And food. I really am hungry… I thought there would be others like me in the crowd and gathered around tables. I don’t know whether I should leave or stay a few more minutes…Shall I stay or shall I go? Them: Why are we all grouped together and standing in the darkness? There is light shining on her, but where is ours? Can somebody go find the person in charge? We have been standing here for a long time… What’s going on? Her: Stay or go… Stay? Go? Should I sit down or maybe walk toward the crowd and ask if someone else knows what is going on. If this is an interview or audition, I do not want to leave before it is my turn. It feels like it is my turn, but my turn for what? How do you imagine the scene plays out…?

The Red Chair (Diptych) Acrylic 30H x 60W Inches The Red Chair Life stops for no one. As much as we would sometimes like it to stop…even For a few seconds… To savor a moment in time, a scene, an exchange. Or maybe we could just slow down its passage as we cherish Its passage, its gifts, its scents and sounds… sweet seconds with our children or Parents…or Our own youth. Bigger than life itself, TIME looms, Flies, slows down, or speeds up. So, let me take a “time out” … a moment to sit in the Red Chair and Replay scenes of life. Moments in time. Stop the world… I see moments flying by me… I see the red chair but cannot get to it for a longed for “time out.” My stopping of the clock. My savoring of a memory. My RED CHAIR MOMENT. This is my salute to mortality and that All-too-short dance that is my beautiful life. Stop. The. World. I want to get off…just for a few seconds. I promise. I need to sit down…now. Just for a moment. In the Red Chair of possibilities.

Change begins, silent at first… Then, speaks with a wimper, a cry… and gradually gains in amplitude and volume and range . Blinders off, one by one by one, wherever we are, we see that something, feel that something …and know that changing that something begins and ends with me | you | him | her | them | us | every one of us. MASKS AND MIRRORS

Elaine Weiner-Reed’s “Masks and Mirrors - Explorations of Identity” collection honors the human spirit in all its colors, resiliency, and fortitude. Her work is an excavation into the psychology of relationships - from the inside, out. Focusing on unraveling the complexity and mystery of human emotion, choices, motivations, and behavior, she features the individual within or outside of a group dynamic. Weiner-Reed seeks answers to life’s riddles and challenges using the tools of an artist to document her findings, leave clues, and mark the path. Focused on transience and imperfection, some themes that run through her work are telling the unknown or hidden stories. With analytic precision and an intuitive soul, she explores the evolution of one’s identity in all its layers - from glimpses in the mirror to introspection across time, highlighting facets of each character’s solitary existence within an increasingly globalized world.

Elaine Weiner-Reed honors the individual spirit and personal history of different individuals, envisioning their stories as pictorial medleys evolving as their worlds turn. Monuments to life, her creations resurrect feelings of transcendence, mystery, and hope.

Once Upon A Someday Acrylic and Latex 38W x 60H Inches Once Upon A Someday (Poem) By Elaine Weiner-Reed She peeks out from under Cloak … Her cloak - It’s invisible. Silent Shrouded in obscurity Female. Amorphous. Head uncovered, she breathes For the first time She Hears her own voice. Quiet. Uncertain… Words try to form… fighting to escape. Her throat…. Vibrations in her throat Building Decloaking She struggles to form her words, to channel her feelings… UNSUNG CHORDS. She hears them perfectly formed, resonant… A ripple runs through her. She shakes off the stifling ensnaring shroud of invisibility Marveling at her form… hands and body… Hands body … create She creates … Life. She creates life. Life’s blood and essence Life affirming. Life-giving. Her mouth moves in time to the still-silent words streaming through her veins as she stands, walks forward… Gaining her place, her space in time. Watching other Females apparate around her progressively shedding their shrouds of silence … of non-existence. Silent Chorus wraps the earth Their shrouds become ribbons of color, connecting them The Female awakens, rises, sings. The Awakening has begun Voices raised in songs yet to be heard. Illustrious harmony to be reckoned with.

L'Enigme 60W x 48H Inches Acrylic, Plaster, Latex, Impasto/Paste, and Glazes on Canvas L’Enigme – Bastille Day Tribute (Nice, 2016) On the Promenade des Anglais, where I had strolled in joy some eight months before, a crazed truck driver plowed through the crowds killing 85 souls and injuring hundreds. And the world turned on its axis once more..., Atlas weeping along with us. My painting is a tribute to the souls who were lost to us that day and to all the souls and hearts mourning for the loss and its affront to human dignity. As I imagined the scene of blood and tears and confusion, I wept as I painted, the horror fresh in my mind...lest we forget. The largest painting I had done to date, it took all of me and I gave it all I had to give, at times kneeling on the floor over it, my tears mingling with the reds and whites of blanched figures. My painting shows some 35 souls bent or frozen in place, the scene a kaleidoscope of flashes of red...life oozing between the cracks and a shroud over the world. Peace is a dream I pray is in our reach...

Chance Encounters Acrylic on Canvas 24W x 36H Inches https://www.elaineweinerreed.com/chance-encounters/ To listen to the original music and songs inspired by this painting. Chance Encounters & A Prime Location (Poem) Location. Location. Location. Not just one’s home or business, But one’s perspective Or life At any given moment in time. A young man seated at a table… In a restaurant or a pub… Anywhere. He sits and imagines…, reflecting on his present or past or future… fading in and out from the movement and persons around him, Entering his own private world of thoughts and hopes and dreams. As life or passersby intersect with his world, He and they connect… in a glance, In a breath, in a nod or in a smile. One’s “prime location” alternates to become those moments in which life colors our hearts in shades of ephemera.

    The Waiting Game
THE WAITING GAME by Elaine Weiner-Reed Acrylic 48" x 48" Four figures. The seated figure appears to be on the edge of her seat...in anticipation? Is Seemingly frozen in time, waiting for someone or someone or something… What happens next? What are the relationships and roles of the three neo-classical figures, the standing trio? What is the story? …their story? How are they connected? ...or not connected? Imagine the possible storylines converging...
  • The In-Between
    The In-Between
The In-Between Acrylic and Latex 24W x 36H Inches Reading between the lines, seeing beyond the surface... Clues can be found in an individual's posture and demeanor. I'll leave the imagining to you! “The In-Between” evolved over several years, never quite satisfying me until… Enter experimentation! Tired of playing it safe by dabbing fresh color here and there, I put the canvas on the floor and let intuition take the lead. I grabbed a few tubes of paint and knelt beside the painting, squeezing big globs of yellow ochre onto the middle of my canvas. I felt like I could breathe again. I resisted the urge to grab a paintbrush and decided to risk everything to see where it would take me. With a scraper, I spread the liquid gold masking pre-existing forms and colors, purposefully leaving the center of the painting empty of easily recognizable forms. Wonderful new textures resulted from all the layers, and the painting’s ambiance of mystery and energy solidified. The technique of using scraper instead of paintbrush was an experiment for me. My joy doubled in that my experimentation led to defying other boundaries, among them, breaking painting’s golden rule about “focal points!” Statement Focused on identity as impacted by transience and imperfection, some common themes that run through my work are telling the unknown or hidden stories. My work juxtaposes strength and inner beauty with vulnerability and external imperfections. My creative process involves analyzing and building characters in layers, mimicking the way identities are formed throughout a lifetime: layer by colorful or complex layer.

GRAFFITI ME THIS

Graffiti Me Here, There, and Everywhere

What occurs when myth and reality collide?

In my practice, I create artworks that inspire healthy emotional and intellectual tension, stirring the imagination and sparking dialogue about one’s identity and the concept of self-acceptance and beauty.

As children, we scribble from the time we can hold a crayon or pencil. In some cases, scribbles lead us into the world of art where we “learn” to be an artist. Once ensconced in that domain, artists can lose site of the intuitive, automatistic, expressionistic marks that served as their undercarriage.

The internal struggle for self-acceptance battles with all the societal and cultural chaos of images and words and conflicting messages regarding who we are and what is valued by society. The search for identity means quieting all that external noise and diving into ourselves to appreciate and recognize the beauty beneath the surface.

Interspersed in my practice with more identifiable figurative works is a body of work that falls into my graffiti series. That series encompasses my Chester park freedom ride series, representing some of the happiest times in my life when I would ride my bike up and down the hills in our local park. These Freedom Rides crystalized as the key moments in my teenage years when I remember being happy and light beyond belief. I remember pedaling fast and then picking my feet up off the pedals to let momentum carry me… flying over bumps, the wind in my hair… laughing out loud.

Also forming their own graffiti sub-series are works representing explorations of identity that contain layers of paint, some containing handwritten words in English or French, many of which were formed of emotion-packed bold strokes and lines. This series focuses on capturing all the thoughts boiling and roiling around us and traveling through us. In other words, the conflict and contradictions in our society. Examples from this series include: Stop Injustice, Family Dynamics, Spectral Lines, Turning The Page, Balancing Act, and Red, Black, and Blond. At times, the series took me to calmer places and the graffitiesque works represent a mystic mindfulness: Sands of Time, Renaissance, Fabric of Time.

Turning The Page Acrylic and Latex 52H x 35W Inches An early graffiti piece in response to a personal betrayal. VISUAL ACOUSTICS

Listen to the Art.

Look at the Music.

Convergence of Art and Music:

Music has always been entwined with Elaine Weiner-Reed’s art. Sometimes she paints to the music of Chimene Badi, the Beatles, or Funky and Motown favorites, but her inner rhythm syncs best with Jazz. As a result, her studio is generally filled with the soulful music of Miles Davis, Maynard Ferguson, Sonny Rollins, Claude Nougaro, Herbie Hancock, and Vanessa Collier.

A sculptor during her college years, Weiner-Reed primarily devoted the intervening decades to painting (oil, watercolor, acrylics). Gradually, she worked her way back to sculpture in 2014, carving her first stone sculpture during an International Artist Residency in Poland. By 2017, she was creating mixed media sculptures in metal and plaster (the Phoenix Rising series), which made her 2018 entry into the world of metal art fabrication at Anne Arundel Community College seem a natural, logical progression for her. Weiner-Reed’s question “How does my art SOUND to you?” launched her “Every Painting is a Song” collaboration in 2016, and became the genesis for the 2018 Art-Meets-Music collaboration event of the same name with the music group ROGUE COLLECTIVE during the artist’s Annapolis 2018 solo show.

Subsequently inspired by the enchanting violin and cello music of ROGUE COLLECTIVE after their creation of five unique Structured Improvisational pieces inspired by her original artwork*, Weiner-Reed found herself sketching imaginary musical instruments. Within a few months, her Visual Acoustics collection was born and Weiner-Reed explains that she can now show ROGUE COLLECTIVE “how their music LOOKS” to her.
