Brendan's profile

I am an artist from Brooklyn, NY now living and working in Baltimore, MD.

Human behavior and interaction, group mentality, mass media, cultural events, spirituality, natural and unnatural phenomenon, urban landscape, decay and abandonment are all themes depicted in my work.

People in often-unnatural settings, interacting and reacting to each other and their surroundings are portrayed in my paintings. I explore relationships between individuals, small groups, and society with reference to both cultural and natural events. Much of my work is set on urban rooftops, which often mirror aspects of natural landscapes, specifically the vast landscapes of the American West and Midwest.

New York City, both past and present, has as a strong influence on my work. Specifically, I am inspired by the sense of layering that pervades the city – from the metaphorical notion of layering humans on top of one another in habitation to the literal layering of subway platform ads. Murals, posters, graffiti, stickers, TV antennas, paint, tar and concrete are the natural elements that make up the city landscape. This is reflected in my work by the mixing and overlapping of paints, images, edges, and textures. To make the paintings I use oil, house and spray paint, pencil, charcoal and ink as well as collage and resin.
