Time Maps 100-299

How do cycles create our lives and surroundings? A living thing can break with the order of its own life and decompose. Other living things may come upon it and find nutrients. The atoms that are myself take the form of a human, and I live within a culture that makes sense of these cycles through a structure we call "time." Time is an attempt at understand the vast structures of our existence. Through my work in the series Time Maps, I invite reflection and imagination into the concept of time.

.
The cyclical process of crochet accumulates to create the forms in this series. Raw cotton is spun into a thread. A crochet hook pulls a loop of that thread through another loop to create a stitch. Through slight variations in this process of dying, spinning, and crocheting each Time Map is created.

Braid Bus

A braid binds a single fiber with many fibers into one unified strand, multiplying the fiber’s strength. Inspired by personal events and memories, Braid Bus was an open and inclusive community gesture of intimacy. Artscape festival-goers were invited to join in caregiving and sharing, while building conversation with others about how hair care has become a ritual or tradition in their own lives. Myself and several team members braided hair over the course of three days at Artscape 2017.

Word Well Mind Travel

Your ticket awaits. Artscape festival goers interacted with this project to collect four parts of a poem. Beginning at well number one, a ticket was taken for recording the words. Words were randomly selected by spinning the bucket at each well. Participants were invited to explore these words as poetry, and to follow the currents of thought created as their mind combines the unlikely paring of words into a question. The artwork happens in your mind, enjoy the journey!

Use this ticket to record the four randomly generated words. Together the words make a fresh experience of the words as they interact with each other to create a nonsense sentence.

Protective Objects, Reflective Objects

  • Blue Mask-Shield
    Blue Mask-Shield
Hand spun (drop spindle) cotton yarn, dye, hooks, thread, 7 x 14 x 4 inches, 2020 This mask-shield is used to block out light from the screen that contributes to eye strain. The artist covers the screen with the mask-shield during periods of video meetings that require only listening. An opening at the top of the mask-shied allows for continued use of the camera on the computer, and the bottom edge of the piece stops short of covering the mute and un-mute button in the video chat. The artist calls for reflection on our relationship with digital technologies.
