About Mike
Baltimore County
A 1975 graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art, Mike McConnell worked for more than 30 years as an illustrator before focusing on his fine art. He often turns to nature for inspiration for the vivid visual stories he tells. He uses paint in a collage-like way, cutting out shapes with vibrant colors on handmade wood panels, paper, and found material.

I’ve lived for 37 years in the same house on several wooded acres. The original house is a log cabin that was built in the mid 1700s. I restored the interior to expose the logs. The floors are wood. The ceilings are wood. I planted many trees when I first moved here. Many have matured and fallen over. I regularly cut and split wood on my property. It’s my primary source of heat. Not surprisingly, trees influence my art.

Work on Paper
For no good reason I didn't make any work on paper for the past few years. I guess (hope) I was consumed with painting. I broke out the crayons a couple months ago. What tooke me so long? The fun is back.
I use a technic that combines wax oil crayons, oil pastels and sumi ink. I'm teaching some workshops. Check my links and sign up. Coloring fun.

Persevering Today
I've been making art full time since I was an undergraduate at MICA. That's about 50 years now. I've supported myself this whole time making pictures. I've never had a job other than self-employed. I know I'm lucky.
