#BaltimoreGirls

“BaltimoreGirls” is an anthology of the lives of approximately 7 women and their life experiences attempting to overcome many of the obstacles that women living in Baltimore face.  Each woman has a story dealing with loneliness, isolation, fear, self-esteem, family, suicidal thoughts, seeking love, identity, abandonment, choices, coming out, pregnancy, and pursuit of happiness – embodied by every woman’s tale.  They are the stories of real people finding their own beauty and identity and creating their own sense of self-empowerment and social development.  “BaltimoreGirls” is designed to educate and inspire those seeking to overcome obstacles in their own lives.  This thought provoking array of works will have you amazed and wanting more. The “Baltimore Girls” Exhibition is intended to become a travelling art collection and will tour venues locally and throughout the country.

FlipSide of Space & Time

Installation within the "Intersection" Exhibition, MICA Curatorial Practice MFA Program, Curated by Yvonne Hardy-Phillips
September 2015
Maryland Institute College of Art, Fred Lazarus IV Center, Baltimore, MD
These photographs explore the presence of Black Baltimore Artists at the intersection of North Avenue and Charles Street, evoking the vibrancy, creativity and innovation of the 1970’s continued today through music, art and fashion.  Inspired by original photographs provided by Marcus Townes, a well-known community member and long standing employee of Goldbloom's Department Store (now the Windup Space), these images traverse shared generational experiences of social, cultural, economic and political realities. These intersectional dynamics of space, time and place reflect the continuity of Black Artists' realities. The “Intersection” exhibit is a curated selection of newly commissioned work and pieces from personal collections, including painting, photography, projection artistry, site-specific installation, and performance art.

#DearBaltimore

Peace Against the Machine documents the collective efforts of a people within their own community. The film displays the peaceful protest not shown via mainstream media.
Images often speak louder than words and it’s no secret that many of the images that caught the attention of national media did not reflect the whole story about the community Uprising resulting from the death of Freddie Gray.
Images can help us deconstruct how we experience traumatic events and what we are doing to make a difference. In this Listening Circle, which features the photography of Team Genius producers and photography artists Dominic Nell and Reuben Green, participants can view photographs and videos taken before, during and after the now world-famous Uprising. The photographers will speak about their experiences and how their visual stories helped to change the narrative about what happened. Participants will have an opportunity to share their feelings and reflections on the images. The exhibit will also provide access to resources, such as mental health providers and organizations that are working to make a difference.
