Baltimore Billie Holiday Project
Last summer, the Upper Fells Point Neighborhood Association was Awarded The PNC Transformative Art Grant. I, along with several other artists, were chosen to paint murals depicting Billie Holiday, who grew up in Fells Point. I did two murals on Durham St, a tiny little street where Billie spent her difficult childhood. My first mural entitled "Billie Holiday Rises Above Baltimore" shows Billie Holiday golden as the sun, rising out of a purple cloud over the drab city below. I hoped to illustrate how Billie overcame the adversity of her early life to go on to glory and international aclcaim. The next mural, entitled "Billie Holiday at The Royal" depicts Ms. Holiday signing autographs outside of The Royal Theater, one of the 20th century Baltimore's top venues showcasing African American talent. I really valued the experience of working with the community on this project. The models for the children in the second mural were all from the neighborhood, and it was very satisfying to see the residents please with the way we beautified the block.

Melified ManAn ancient cure-all was the corpse of a man cured in honey. The man had to be close to death, and had to eat nothing but honey until he excreted nothing but honey. He would soon die of malnutrition, and his body placed in a vat of honey for a year. Then he would be cut up and sold as medicine Watercolor 2012 14x17

Radium GirlsDuring WW1, the wrist watch was invented because pocket watches where not safe or convenient for men lying on their faces in trenches. They were also dangerous because they required fire to see them, which would give away your position to the enemy. So the army issued wristwatches that had faces with glowing numbers. The numbers were painted with radium based paint, which where painted on by poor women in factories back in the states. In order to keep the point on the tip of the brush, the women were advised to suck the paintbrush. They all died of radiation poison before they received any compensation.

Series of Superstition
I wanted to illustrate a series of paintings about superstitions. I have always enjoyed learning the different ways that people form around the world and throughout time have tried to make sense of the world.

Fruit
In this series, I looked for alternate ways to look at fruit that we see in our everyday lives, and focus on an aspect of the name, nickname, or history to create a concept that is interesting and sometimes disturbing.

PineappleIn colonial America, the pineapple was considered a symbol of welcome. sailors would put one on their fence posts to signal to the community that the mariner had returned home safely. Other Murals
Throughout the last couple of years, I have commissioned by various community associations and businesses to create original murals on or in their establishment. One restaurant, Holy Frijoles, wanted a Dia De Los Muertos style mural inside, then an Art Deco style sign on the outside of the building. A laundromat requested images of a happy washing machine, and many bubbles on the facade. A record store requested a portrait of a movie character. I also received two grants in the fall of 2014 to do murals in Highlandtown. One is for Highlandtown Elementary/Middle #215, in which I depict images that are of importance to the school like the environment, and Dolphins, the school mascot. It is on a narrow but long concrete wall that partially surrounds the school. The second one is a mural for DiPasquale's Italian Deli and Grocery in honor of their 100th Anniversary. I painted the original location of the store to resemble the storefront it once was, along with various members of the DiPasquale Family. These two last projects are ongoing.

Library Square Mural
I was commissioned by BOPA and Banner Neighborhoods to do a mural that illustrated the values of Community stewardship, partnership and cooperation between people of all ages and races, and the natural diversity of species that exist in the natural areas of Maryland. I designed a mural that depicts an older woman helping two children in a garden. They are working on a garden comprised of three species of native flower: Purple cone flower, black eyed susans, and red cardinal flowers. There are is also a Baltimore Oriole, and an Eastern Robin. I spent a month finishing this Mural. It was fifty feet long and twenty five feet tall. Since I finished this piece, I have gotten a lot of praise and compliments from people in the neighborhood. A local musician used my mural as a backdrop for her music video, and in the summer of 2014, a garden was placed in the abandoned lot in front of the mural, and some of the flowers I painted where planted. I am very proud of how I have impacted this community with my art.
