About Sam

Baltimore City
I grew up with an infatuation with cartoons and comic books. Since graduating with an MFA from Hunter College in 2006, I have had solo exhibitions in New York City (Jonathan LeVine Gallery, Claire Oliver Gallery), Connecticut (Real Art Ways), as well as at The New Britain Museum of American Art. I have been fortunate to have my work included in shows nationally/internationally, as well as appear in a number of magazines and other art publications. I currently live in Baltimore, MD with my wife… more

Goucher Show

This is a group of work exhibited at Goucher College in 2013 as part of a group show titled "Whatchamacallit Thingamajig." The idea of the show was for the artists to "embody fragments of elements that seem familiar but are not easily identified" through each's medium. In my work for the show I used cartoon forms that are reminiscent of cartoons that we have seen throughout the ages. Borrowing from these recognizable characters, I redrew them skewing and contorting their original form. In this way the viewer is struck with vague recollection - a shape that suggests a cartoon they may remember but might not be able to pin down.

2015/2016

For these paintings I've continued to explore cartoon shape and figure. Using shaped panels and more traditional rectangular panels I've also continued to investigate how the construct can effect the design concept. "LOL" is comprised of over 120 separate shaped paintings while "Mr. Mustache" and "Long, Long" are done on rectangular panels.
