Rachel's profile

I was born in rural NH and moved to Baltimore in 2004 after completing a BFA at Syracuse University. I grew up in a family that loves folk art and storytelling as well as traditional artisanry. My mother makes braided rugs, knits socks, and canes chairs in her spare time from being a reference librarian. My father teaches literature and directs high school plays. Together they run a side business scouring auctions for discarded artwork and vintage china & furniture which they clean and re purpose in antique booths all over new england. My artwork is an exploration of the relationships and interactions between women, and how and why styles and themes in folk art and mythology become tradition.

My interest in the folk art of other cultures has brought me to Italy, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Panama, El Salvador, Mexico, Canada along with travels all over the United States. My own work is most recently inspired by a mix of Scandinavian design and Mexican textile patterns.

In addition to painting, I run an independent Baltimore based apparel line Red Prairie Press (www.redprairiepress.com) which I hand print with my own folk-inspired designs, allowing for a more utilitarian way for people to own small pieces of my artwork no matter what financial bracket they belong to.
