Lou's profile

I was born in the Little Italy section of Baltimore City.

As a child, I was formally trained to read and write music. I also taught myself to play clarinet ‘by ear’. This formal education, with its focus on details, combined with my impulse for experimentation. These different ways of learning informs the way I approach art making and life.

My early university years were dominated by the great writers and philosophers, art history, music. That came to an end with the war in Vietnam and time spent in the Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand.

Upon my return, I went back to college, studying music theory and composition. I also began to take classes in drawing, and art history.

Not having a clear career path, I entered the work world and didn’t return to college until several years later when I found myself attracted to mathematics, art and design. Math fueled my love of art. I also started to teach myself photography. Eventually, while working full time, I completed my BA in biology

Today, I am still learning and experimenting and still inspired by music, math, philosophy, science, and art history. My interests in the visual arts span the gamut: portraiture, surrealistic collages, landscapes and the images range between realism and complex abstraction.
