I came to Maryland from Alabama's Auburn University, an agricultural college with a small but fierce
Art Department. Here in Baltimore, I studied under Grace Hartigan at the Hoffberger School of
Painting. In 1985, with Nancy Andrews and Michael Willis, I formed a musical performance art trio. In this ensemble, Lambs Eat Ivy, and its following incarnations, Girls Ranch, 3 Pigs Cafe, Radiant Pig and Lurch and Holler, I write songs, create musical plays, and create sets and costumes.
In a trio which includes members of the "Tinklers" and "Half Japanese" I sing the words from Ancient Greek Poets and Philosophers, which are freshly translated by Chris Mason and Mark Jickling. We set these words of lyrical and timeless wisdom to folk music.
In a duo with Nathan Bell, "Spacecrafts and Walking Sticks", I create Antebellum Psychedelic banjo/vocal pieces. We imagine Stone Age era Galactic Ancestors landing on the Civil War battle field and the music that might ensue.
All the while, I make oil paintings in my attic, working to create a mythology that links us to the first humanlike species who created magical images on cave walls. I set this mythology into the land and water of my origin, the Tallapoosa River.
