About xander

Baltimore City
Hello, I am xander dumas, a multidimensional queer artist who lives in Baltimore. I am self taught and love to practice illustration, fiber arts, photography, graphic design, poetry, film & performance. The ‘Queer Zodiac Project’ is my first independent series, most of my work is created collaboratively with elliot mittens cooperson, we moonlight under the names ‘Ephemeral Fossils’ & ‘The Dandy Vagabonds’.

Aries

    .aries. xander dumas. 18.november.16
With resilience initiation she emerges.
With resilience initiation-she-emerges.
Headfirst she breaks the soil bringing forth with her...life...
Bringing forth with her breath...
bringing forth with her, a cycle of renewal that strengthens weary hearts
-that reminds weary thoughts, that...she.is.a.warrior.
And she will come again & again & again- growing thick the shorn coat of a butting ram.
With resilience initiation, she emerges.

In February 2016 i took a class on how to read my natal chart. This class was lush with symbology, abstraction, connection & cosmic language. As i filled my notebook with symbols & adjectives, comparisons and hidden meanings it became clear that a visceral collection of the zodiac would better connect language with meaning. From the space of research, collaboration & inspiration, the ‘queer zodiac project’ was born.

The ‘queer zodiac project’ is a series compiled of 12 vignettes of collaborated conversations & photoshoots with 12 dynamic queer Baltimore artists & activists. Each vignette is a symbolic story weaving together sewn tapestries of planets that have their exalted & detrimental voice within each zodiacal sign and an illustrated expression of the emotion & action of each symbol.

I created Mars in the Summer 2016, the photoshoot, illustration & Aries vignette were created in the Fall 2016

Gemini

Gemini . 27.11.16 . xander dumas
a paradox on pointe
with graceful strength he rises to his toes
poised & pirouette in mutable air.
pulled by passions that plié & pivot
his mutable mind shifts contemplation...
diaphanous fibers replaced by leather, then a slipper becomes a boot...
his mutable body shifts in presentation

Cancer & Leo

The luminaries: The Sun & the Moon find their homes in Leo & Cancer.

Cancer, a cardinal water sign ebbs and flows with emotion. Like the Moon, the phases or moods shift frequently and  rules the tides. My Cancer photoshoot took place in early June  2016 at the Jones Falls. My Cancer muse, elliot, an old soul with a nostalgic heart personifies the crab symbol.
Leo, fixed fire sign prides themselves on strength & self assurance.

Libra

we breathe in fresh air-crisp- as trees make their transition of season. A tilt of axis...an extension of moonlight. From a moment of balance...from a moment of breath...from a moment of fulcrum- we find libra. Libra, arms extended standing courageous with their venus-heart brave & vulnerable. Upon their chest plate:malleable armor to extend and constrict, extend & so forth from the breath to their venus-heart. Same is this venus-heart welcoming wounded warriors to sift through old sorrows on a journey to being brave & vulnerable.

Scorpio

Spine elongate, shoulders expanded wide- void of movement, void of expression, she waits.
Aromatic tones of vetiver & nutmeg inhale your curious mind... She draws you near... Intense gaze poised upon you demand contact...connection...retreat.
In silence she penetrates your thoughts- she draws you back, she draws you close, she draws you in...
And she feasts upon your offerings.

Capricorn & Aquarius

           Capricorn. 8.december.2016 xander dumas

Contemplative, grounding
Fraught with restrictions,
The seagoat climbs steeply upward. .
Emotionally austere
Guided by convictions,
The seagoat climbs steeply upward. .
Willfully accomplished
Sturdy in must-dos & diction,
The seagoat climbs steeply upward.

Aquarius. 9.december.2016. xander dumas

We experience Stravinsky:

A Rite of Spring that incites chaos
A combination of notes never yet assembled ensuing the bourgeoisie to riot. .
When the marm & the indigo collide,
A new language scrolls from a dream in which symbols & form dance In new patterns. .
When the marm & the indigo collide,
The avant guarde disembody sensation ... A tactile shift speech pattern rhythm that evoke revolution.

The illustration of my Aquarius Muse is based on a photoshoot collaboration inspired by the direction ’breaking down archaic systems’. The illustration of Victor is in front of a 20”x20” sewn tapestry of the Uranus, the modern home planet of Aquarius. The planets on the side are archival prints of other sewn tapestries created for this project, they represent Saturn, the classical home planet, Mars which is in its exaltation, The Moon which is in its detriment and Jupiter which is in its fall. The background is a shimmery painted night sky with the embroidered constellation: Aquarius.

In February 2016 I started the 'queer zodiac project' in which i photographed 12 dynamic queer Baltimore artists or activists who embodied my interpretation of of their zodiacal sign. I turned these photos into a flip book stop motion 1 minute short film, layering together their talent, my illustration & editing. Here my Aquarius muse, surrounded by language archaic & proper, formative & expressive, challenges societal norms. Music by Victor Torres, used with permission by the artist

Pisces

                  Pisces. 10.december.2016. xander dumas
her well is deep...collecting raindrops from ancestors & offerings from cavern cold springs.

When her healing heart swells, her bounty is abundant- offering an ear, an embrace, her voice...
Her well is deep with the wisdom of ancestors echoing breath -you are loved-
created in the fall & winter of 2016

The photoshoot, illustration, creation of Neptune & creation of Pisces vignette all took place in the Fall 2016
