About Adeline

Adeline Rhall is a transfeminine new media artist expecting to graduate from the Maryland Institute College of Art with a double major in Photography and Creative Media Production in 2028. Her work is multidisciplinary in scope and rooted in the ethos of glitch art, exploring the ways technology shapes our identities, perceptions of class, and memory of the past. Scanner Art

Scanner photography (sometimes abbreviated as scanography) is a medium that traces its origins back to the Xerox Art movement of the 60s. The premise is simple: computer scanners are cameras, and like any camera, they're prone to distort, convolute, or otherwise misrepresent the truth of the subject being scanned. I often use scanners as a starting point in my work—when I manipulate a drawing or object or instruct a human subject to move as I scan them in, it feels almost like a performance, one that can turn a physical image into something much more intangible, hyperreal, and hypnagogic. I like to complicate things further with extensive post-processing, moving beyond the initial image into something a little more disassociated/dissociative than the average scanner photograph.

Selections from Graph Art: Form and Process

Selections from my debut exhibition, "Graph Art: Form and Process," which ran for a month earlier this year at the Fred Lazarus IV Center. Each piece was either started or finished in the web-based graphing calculator application Desmos, and select links to my Desmos project files were included as QR codes within the exhibition. The works are partly educational in nature but are mainly intended as a way to use math to try to illustrate the inexplicable.
