About Elizabeth
Baltimore City
I grew up in Baltimore, but traveled extensively after attending college in Virginia, France, and Michigan, where I graduated from the University of Michigan. I majored in French, and though I loved to draw, did not consider myself an artist. I first formally studied art in 1971-72 at the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Cuernavaca, Mexico. I later returned to Baltimore, where I studied at the Mitchell School of Fine Art with Elizabeth Byrd (Polly) Mitchell in the late 1970s before a hiatus of more… more

Landscapes: Water
I am very attracted to scenes with water, whether ocean, lake, or river as is evident in the paintings here. New research shows that, while being in nature produces clear reductions in stress, being close to water augments and compounds those benefits. There is something profoundly calming in the rhythm of ocean waves, the ripples on a lake, rapids over rocks, or the slow currents of a river, and near these I can feel the rest of the world drop away.

Around the U.S.
I paint in Maryland primarily, of course, but also when I travel with my husband around the United States. There is so much interesting and beautiful anywhere, and especially in the huge variety of landscape in our country. I enjoy making a place "mine" by painting it, as I try to record both the scene and my emotional response to it. I am able to paint plein air when no overseas travel is involved, which heightens my connection to the area around me as I paint. These oil and watercolor paintings span a period of 20 years.

The sunlight coming through trees and a sunlit gold and green tree in the left foreground, along with the play of shadows and light on tree trunks and forest floor give a strong sense of place.

Off the Press
A few years ago I bought a small etching press after taking a printmaking workshop and have enjoyed printing monotypes and block prints since then. Some are abstract and some more traditional.
