About Peter
Baltimore County
In Peter Stern’s photography, viewers see the Mid-Atlantic from a unique and intimate perspective. Flying low, slow, and alone in his small airplane over the coal mines of Pennsylvania and the coastal landscapes of the lower Eastern Shore, Stern conveys an intimacy with his subject that echoes his deep personal connection to the region.
With the ability to fly between 500 and 800 feet above his subjects, and shooting primarily in “bird’s-eye” perspective, Stern discovered that he… more

With an artistic background in photography and painting, my interest in aerial photography has been less directed towards representational or descriptive images and more towards making images that capture the abstract expressive beauty of distinct landforms ---often those which have been altered in some way by the hand of man.
My canvas includes quarries, mines, and excavations where the materials of the earth have been churned up and rearranged and redistributed. These landscapes become for me compositions of color, texture, and form, and when combined with natural light are true artistic compositions. When the viewer stands from my photographs it tends to
blur the distinction between whether they are seeing an actual photograph or a painting or hand-made print. This transformative experience is the essence of my artistry.
