About Jan
Baltimore City
Self-taught, after years of intense management responsibilities in the fields of law, graphic design, government, architecture and the arts, I am finally freed to create my own work. My work is neo-expressionist with grateful appreciation for the inspiration of the women Abstract Expressionists of the 40s and 50s. I welcome emotion and coincidence, working intuitively to establish outcomes that are open to interpretation through a universal language. My interests are in the environment and… more

Artist Statement – /Jan Angevine/
/While working at NASA Goddard, in the Atmospheric Sciences Division, I had a front row seat on research confirming the precarious existence of the earth that has deeply affected my understanding of the fragility of life. The experience at NASA compelled me toward an exploration of the conflicts between order and chaos and the boundaries of reality and spirit; themes that show up repeatedly in my work. I am also anchored by my experience in the fields of graphic design and architecture which, if anything, are filled with creative collisions./
/As a painter, I welcome both emotion and coincidence into my paintings. Working intuitively, I establish outcomes that I feel are open to interpretation through the universal language of paint, materials and marks. I also feel that each person’s encounter with a work is a revelation that provides a deeper understanding of the viewer’s conscious and unconscious feelings in relation to the art. I am grateful for the inspiration of the women abstract expressionists whose work is a mainstay: Grace Hartigan, Joan Mitchell, Elaine de Kooning, Perle Fine, Lee Krasner, and the glorious and daring Michael West./
/I reside and paint in Upper Fells Point, where I have crammed myself into a two-story, 600sf row house, on an alley, off an alley./
