Onaje

Onaje, is a full-length play set in two worlds: against the backdrop of the burning city of Cambridge during Maryland’s race riots of 1967, and the American open road of the 1980s. The play follows an eccentric African American hitchhiker who is picked up by a white couple—a headstrong cowboy and a spirited waitress--only to discover they are all inextricably linked by the past.

The play premiered at 2018’s FringeNYC to rave reviews. Now, playwright Robert Bowie Jr. and director Kevin R. Free have teamed up to revise the script to focus not just on Onaje and his white counterpart Richard, but also their fathers, lifelong colleagues on the Eastern Shore of Maryland who are torn apart by a tragic event in their shared past.

The Naked House Painting Society

An early version of The Naked House Painting Society was developed for the Baltimore Playwrights Festival years ago. It was then abandoned and revisited and rewritten during my second life as a playwright.

The Naked House Painting Society reflects my belief that the power of deep committed love can transcend the accepted mediocrity and mendacity of the mundane life. It is designed to contrast American culture and its priority for money, status, narcissism and the pursuit of sensation with the alternative: transcendent love.

In future productions, it is my goal to have a play that is well-crafted, cost-effective, interesting and challenging to the actors and to the audience.

ON their last day, hearts are broken, partners are switched, and each couple pursues a different life. Now, they're reunited at the last house they painted, with the consequences of their choices lingering beneath their attempts to catch up. This is the story of sex between star-crossed lovers, a husband who will risk everything in an effort to win back the love of his wife and about a woman imprisoned by the residue of love that will not die.
