About Lena

Baltimore County
Lena was born in Minnesota, but has spent the majority of her life in the greater Baltimore area. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts at Towson University and graduated Summa Cum Laude. Coming from a family of creators and inventors, she is continually pushing the limits of what can be. Lena's enchantment with photography started when her parents gave her their 1988 Polaroid camera at four years old. They were amongst one of their many moves, which was one of the reasons Lena found it… more

Tender Light

This series is meant to reduce the distance between audience and creator by the artist becoming the subject. Instead of the traditional presentation, this series read as a visual journal. Process is intrinsic to the formation of this work as it unfolds an intimate sketch that is composed of photos and short writings. Exploiting her body, while still concealing her identity creates tension because it invites the viewer to apply their own opinions. Judgement comes with the territory of turning something private to public, but that is also how genuine connections take shape. All of the imagery and anecdotes are from one person’s perspective, but address universal ideas such as love, home, purpose, and youth. It touches on the rawness of everyday living and the human condition; something that is inherently relatable. At the conclusion, the artist turns the camera directly on herself to confront the audience and reel them back into reality. No one is hiding anymore and now a choice has to be made- will a mutual understanding form or will the viewer turn away from her brazen gaze?

This Body

"This Body" is a salute to the human figure and all its glory. It is true that nudity in this modern age is not something profoundly new for all of us. Images of bare chested men and hyper-sexualized women can easily be found within the first few pages of any magazine. But what message does this send? Our bodies are not sexual objects, but by portrayal on a massive scale, it slowly has become that. In reality, the human form is built like an architectural masterpiece. By overlaying images from Frances Benjamin Johnston’s "Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South" over different portions of the body, I strive to capture precisely what the human form is; a structure in itself. Buildings playfully contour to the skin in an effort to challenge the mind to think beyond what we see. The way we admire a beautifully designed edifice is how we should see ourselves, as a strong exemplary construction.
