"Touch Me Not" was completed after the massacre of nine parishioners at Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, June 2015. Using antique photos, I juxtaposed a white schoolboy ready to restore the Southern antebellum order with the racist Confederate flag threaded through two African American boys picking cotton. Interrelationships reveal a deeper truth, the roots of a pernicious and unrelenting American racism. “The past is never dead.
