In Look Left and Look Right, I placed the models in front of a changing color background and asked them to look left and look right, pretending they were attracted by things continually appearing around them. In this piece, I discussed the impact of the development of modern society, especially on the perspective of social media.
The development of communication equipments and social media is so fast, like the appearance and update of iPhones, iPads, iWatches, Google, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr. Life seems more interesting than before because of the continually changing appearance of new things. People also seem busier than ever because they need to keep following the latest trends. For example, we receive so many emails everyday. We check our inbox every time when we hear the beep, in case miss something important, no matter where we are or what we’re doing in the moment. Our friends upload hundreds of new photos and articles on Facebook, and we are used to checking them unconsciously. It seems like that it has become a part of our daily life. At the same time, we acquit the latest news at any place at any time. There is no distance between the latest thing and ourselves. We are used to the scattered time to read the fragments of information and we convince ourselves to get what we want from them. What do we get, finally? How has our life changed with the influence of tons of new things? What is the meaning of the action of looking left and right? It is an interesting behavior, but, what does it mean? Maybe it is a metaphor of the status of our modern life.
It doesn't matter which direction model look at. The key point is the behavior of keeping looking, searching and accepting trivial information. Keep looking might have become a subconscious habit of us. It is not just a behavior which is limited on checking social medias, it is more like a inherent lifestyle, a thing that people keep doing in their whole life. I abstract this checking behavior into the movement of Look Left and Look Right and combine it with colorful and continuous changing background. At the same time, When models shake their heads, the pigtails will hit their faces.
