"Get a Grip," the title story of Flann's second collection, was inspired by the simple misuse of a word. Someone said, "That guy literally hit 40." And she thought, well, not literally. But then again -- what if someone did literally hit 40? What would that look like? Would the person smack a speed limit sign? The numbers on a scale? The opening scene reveals the situation her imagination finally concocted. Ultimately, the story is an exploration of the ways we (mis)interpret the literal, concrete world to suit us. There are many ways we trick ourselves that we have "a grip" on something. Each story explores this concept in some fashion.
