Timothy's profile

Timothy Nohe's artistic process is rooted in a DIY ethos, tracing back to the early days of Punk and the hacker culture, where intellectual discoveries were shared, and collaboration thrived through hands-on approaches in problem-solving, distribution, and presentation. This connection to communities emphasizes direct public engagement both inside and outside traditional art spaces, fostering a commitment to collaboration, improvisation, and abstraction in music and the visual arts. Based in Baltimore, he frequently exhibits, screens and performs abroad in Australia, Europe and Singapore.

With over 15 years of collaboration with dance companies, Nohe brings an improvisational spirit to his video and glitch works and immersive sound scores. Collaborations with organizations such as the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, LucidBeings Dance, Deep Vision Dance, Catey Ott Dance Collective, and Baltimore Dance Project have enriched his artistic path.

Nohe's recent work reflects a "back to the future" exploration of analog modular sound synthesizers and magnetic tape cutting. Revisiting the colorful chaos of patch cables and the tactile process of tape editing, he fuses analog tools with computers, creating a bridge between past and present.

In 2015, an artist residency at Signal Culture in Owego, NY provided Nohe an opportunity to merge his practice as a sound composer with visual media, blending analog video synthesis tools with contemporary software. Subsequent residencies over three years have yielded screenings and installations of Signal Culture-produced work (CosmonautOp, 2016) and a new body of work crafted from studio-built circuits, color synths, and interfaces. These works have gone on to screenings at Louvre Museum, Centre Pompidou and venues throughout Russia as an official selection of the Currents EXPERIMENT - Фестиваль 2022 кино dance festival.

The culmination of these investigations of electronic media led to participation in major public art festivals such as Light City 2017 (Electron Drawing – Visual Music, 2017), as well as gallery exhibitions at the Kohl Gallery at Washington College and the Electronic Gallery at Salisbury University. Nohe's portfolio at the Baker Artist Awards site captures this period, where electronic abstraction and interaction take center stage, posing new challenges and rekindling connections with the subculture of handmade circuit builders and analog media.

Nohe's artistic practice continues to evolve. In the last three years he has created speculative art using natural language Artificial Intelligence image generation and phone apps. As he navigate his sixth decade, Nohe remains curious about art and technology, and is committed to pushing the boundaries of artistic expression and exploration.
