Sara's profile

Pronouns: She/her/hers - Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma and raised in Portland, Oregon, Sara Kaltwasser is a multidisciplinary artist, and community art educator. Sara currently lives and works in Baltimore City. Invested in Community Art & Practice, Sara's foundation is rooted in art education, history, socially-engaged modalities and collective community development.

Sara uses painting, installation, collage & assemblage, sculpture, research and performative process to create works that explore the confluence of education, art, history, and activism, the role of power in the classroom, and the aesthetics of knowledge. Further, Sara sees her teaching practice and community art engagement as an extension of her creative work, worthy of the same care, consideration and attention to detail.

Sara Kaltwasser acquired a degree in Painting and Drawing via the Fine Art Studio concentration from Pacific Northwest College of Art in 2006, with a focus on classical painting techniques and art history. She moved to Baltimore to attend the Maryland Institute College of Art, where she graduated with a Masters of Fine Arts in Community Arts in 2018. She is a 2017/2018 recipient of the Libby Bowerman 82’ Teaching Fellowship at Keswick Multi-Care Center, as well as a 2019 & 2021 Janet & Walter Sondheim Award Semi-Finalist.

Currently, Sara is an Artist in Residence at the Wise & Well Center for Healthy Living - A holistic health center focused on the care and health of elder adults. Her creative activism centers around issues of ageism and the intersections of race, gender, and disability. Her efforts and programming at the Center work towards the creation and implementation of inclusive art curriculums that technically and conceptually engage participants. Special attention is paid to programming and projects that invest in creative problem solving, fine motor development, decolonized histories, and conceptually driven projects that celebrate the unique creative visions of participants.
