Sally's profile

Sally Wern Comport founded Art at Large, Inc. in 2003. Combining her life-long career as an illustrator with an interest in exhibition design and large scale work, Comport’s firm applies visual problem solving skills to publishing, public and institutional artwork and environmental graphic design. A graduate of Columbus College of Art and Design, Comport went on to earn her masters degree from Syracuse University. She remains a frequent lecturer and instructor at Maryland Institute College of Art.

Recent exhibitions by Art at Large inc. in collaboration with Chuck Mack Design include Outside In at Winterthur Garden, Library, & Estate, Spectrum of Fashion at the Maryland Center for History and Culture, and Family of Flag makers: The Women Who Created The Star-Spangled Banner. In 2017, Comport’s firm created the imagery for the National Parks Service Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center. Comport’s largest scale work to date is a 6 story public art piece entitled “TheTree of Life” in Rockville, Maryland.

Comport’s most recent illustrated publications Ada’s Violin, Nile Crossing, Love Will See You Through, and Zora & Me have garnered numerous awards from the Society of Illustrators including a Gold Medal and inclusion in the Original Art show, as well as recognition by Communication Arts, School Library Journal, and the National Christopher Award.
