Phill's profile

Phill Branch is a storyteller working in film, creative nonfiction and theater. He is a 2023 recipient of the Maryland State Arts Council’s Creativity Grant and a 2019 Rubys Artist Award grantee for storytelling and performance. He is also a 2018 GrandSlam Champion of The Moth in DC.

An alumnus of the American Film Institute, Branch recently directed "Hampton University: One of the Wonders of the World" which is currently on the film festival circuit. His previous film,  "Searching for Shaniqua," a documentary about the impact names have on our lives, won the HBO Best Documentary award at the 2016 Martha's Vineyard African-American Film Festival.

Phill will debut his new work, Five Stories, Some Banter and a Talkback: A Solo Storytelling Show About Calling Things What They Are at Baltimore Theatre Project in April 2023. Part performance, part story workshop; the show explores the painfully simple practice of accepting what is actually happening and believing what we see right in front of us. What happens when we don’t remix the narrative and just let things be?
