Laura's profile

Laura Grothaus is a Baltimore writer and visual artist. Interested in the politics of magic and memory, she tackles everything from robot babysitters to mermaid molting.

Her work has been featured by or is forthcoming in BUST, The Cincinnati Review, Cimarron ReviewPleiades, and Fairytale Review. It has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and garnered awards internationally, from Poetry in Pubs in Bath, England to the Nazim Hikmet Poetry Competition in Cary, North Carolina. Galleries ranging from Art Enables in Washington, DC to SOHO20 in New York City have shown her paintings and sculptures. She’s attended workshops through Tin House and Winter Tangerine, and the Sewanee Writers' Conference has awarded her a scholarship for their 2022 summer program.

Collaborations are key to her practice. As a teacher, she’s partnered with kindergarteners, college students, and everyone in between. Her Baltimore writing workshop for adults has fostered the creation of several full-length manuscripts. She's co-directed plays, illustrated books, performed in train cars, and otherwise made a ruckus.

She’s at work on a hybrid manuscript exploring queerness and childhood and a novel about singing bones.
