Karen Amelia's profile

My work sometimes begins with just a word. I may have written it or heard it or seen it or found it. It does not matter where it begins, just that it is a response to a part of  my world. Other times my work begins as I simply stitch pieces of cloth together without a plan or an idea, but just to create and to keep my hands moving. Later, when I listen and observe, the pieces begin to come together and call for a different kind of making – to wait, to listen for the next step. At other times, my work begins with a clear image and a few words, or even a poem that leads me to find just what that image needs to grow and become something new, something that is needed.
As I listen and take the next steps, one by one, I slowly realize that I am letting my response be born as a response for the larger world. Even when I struggle with big worldly issues, I use my art to create a blessed response rather than a fall into negativity and fear. As the work and I speak and listen, back and forth, I am reminded once again that I have been given a gift to create art that can make a difference.
