Joanne's profile

"The Old Will Become New and the New Will Become Holy"
Rabbi Joanne Yocheved Heiligman  has become known for her Biblically themed art in fabric and mixed media over the past 15 years.
Her subject matter spans the centuries from  ancient Biblical texts to current political topics.  She guides the viewer past the "thee's and thou's" of traditional translations to bring Bible tales back to life.
The written word acquires place, face, and a vibrant lived meaning by connecting to the personal experience of each viewer.
She approaches art as a textualist and text as an artist giving her work layers and layers of meaning.
Her art has been exhibited in the American Visionary Art Museum and the Ratner Museum in Maryland, and at the annual Drisha exhibition at the JCC in Manhattan.  She has had one-woman-shows at Lovely Lane United Methodist Church, the HaMakom Gallery at Temple Emanuel in Kensington Maryland, and Baltimore Hebrew Congregation’s Hoffberger Gallery.
In 2012-2013 she was awarded a Drisha Arts Fellowship to further study Biblical and rabbinic text to inform her art. She spent weekdays in New York City for that academic year, and skyscrapers and the Statue of Liberty still appear in her work.
She is a member of  the American Guild of Jewish Art for whom she was the featured artist in their Spring magazine in 2013.
In 2018 Rabbi Heiligman left congregational work to pursue her art full time.
