David's profile

My Name is David Zobel and I am an illustrator, painter, and designer. I have been illustrating and painting since 2010 and designing since 1999. I went into graphic design out of high school
because I was told by a high school teacher that I cannot draw and should not be doing art. Which was a shame because I loved art.

But I listened to him and found my way to college, not pursuing art. Instead I majored in communication, which I did love, and found graphic design. I later received my masters in Design from Pratt Institute in 2002 in Digital Design and have been working as a graphic designer since.  I got back into fine art about 2010. Since then I have been creating non stop and continue to try new ideas and new mediums.

My inspiration comes from my kids, life, type, texture and color. Being in NYC for two and a half years really changed my outlook on texture. I was able to start to see the beauty in decay and destruction. How old and destroyed can actually be exciting and new. After New York I took a trip to Italy and that further cemented my love of texture.

I took the idea of texture and was working it into my digital designs, but never really explored it as a physical medium. Until about 7 years ago I was drawing with my 4 year old, drawing his name in bubble letters. He said to me,  “Daddy, put eyes on it!” because he saw a monster in the letter I was drawing. That creative process sparked a passion that has lead me to exploring the world of illustrated monsters ever since. And not only monsters, it struck a spark in me to create, period. I started working with pen and ink and then to paint and then to what I use now in my fine art, spray paint.

Since that time I have used spray paint and texture to create interesting abstract landscapes and color infused pieces of artwork.
