Brian's profile

Brian Prechtl has been a member of the percussion section of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra since 2003 and the Grand Teton Music festival since 1992. He was honored by the League of American Orchestras in 2016 with a Ford Musician Award for Excellence in Community Service for his work as a Teaching Artist in OrchKids, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s outreach program for under-served youth.  His innovative use of bucket drumming uniquely creates a sense of community while introducing strong musical concepts.

An active composer, Mr. Prechtl has had world premiere performances at the Grand Teton Music Festival, at the Eastman School of Music and in Baltimore. He has won composition prizes from the Percussive Arts Society and the College Music Society.

His latest set of compositions pairs music and the spoken word. Over the past ten years he has set eight Walt Whitman poems from his iconic collection Leaves of Grass.  To celebrate the 200th anniversary of Walt Whitman's birth, May 31 2019, Mr. Prechtl produced performances of all of these works  here in Baltimore and at Denver University. His new CD Grand Is The Seen is the result of this project.

This year, Brian has been selected as one of twelve participants across the United States in the League of American Orchestras Emerging Leaders Program. He will spend an intensive year in a training program designed to help develop administrative, communication and leadership skills.
